Proximal and Distal

Technically, the terms Proximal and Distal are used only for appendages. Using a line segment where the endpoints are the place the appendage meets the body and the point furthest away from the body:

Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment along the axis.

Distal: Further from the point of attachment along the axis.
