Sagittal, Transverse, and Coronal Planes

Note: The above image is not in Standard Anatomical Position

Sagittal Plane: Divides into left and right pieces

  • Midsagittal: Divides into left and right along the midline, creating equal halves. This is the mirror image plane.
  • Parasagittal: Any sagittal plane parallel to the midsagittal and off the midline

Transverse Plane: Divides into superior and inferior pieces

Coronal Plane: Divides into anterior and posterior pieces. This is also called the frontal plane.

Cross sections are planes perpendicular to the long axis that runs along a structure. In the image above, the transverse plane could produce a cross section.
